Hypnosis is basically a trance like state wherein the person being hypnotized is totally engaged to the extent that what he or she are focusing on is what appears real to them. There are everyday forms of hypnosis that we ourselves partake of. Take for example how hypnosis works when reading an engaging book or watching a gripping movie. These are some forms of hypnosis that we undergo each day without us even realizing that we have done it. What happens is the person focuses on one specific thing only and excludes all other thoughts and outside interference from their surroundings. How Hypnosis WorksAs a result of this exclusion, people under hypnosis are now very susceptible to suggestions. The subject being hypnotized is actually not sleepy or drowsy. He is still fully alert just like when he is awake but only now, focused on one particular thing. Give some thought again to watching a movie and how we often empathize with the actors after a strong dramatic or thrilling scene. We absorb the movie as a reality and get engrossed in it.

Let’s talk about clinical hypnosis. Once under a hypnotist’s suggestions, the subject begins to exclude all other stimuli and concentrates only on what the hypnotist is saying, which makes the subject prone to these suggestions. The subject now begins to accept the suggestions as reality which is how many conditions are treated. These suggestions, which are used to change addictions, habits or preconceived ideas of the subject, can be most often accomplished in only a few sessions. Clinical hypnosis is basically manipulating the reality in the minds of subjects to believe otherwise. Many subjects with phobias or extreme anxiety can be persuaded to believe that they no longer have a need for these reactions by retracing steps back to the initial event that brought about this phobia or fear. The hypnotist will generally recreate the said event and separate it from the developed reaction by leading the subject, and this is how hypnosis works. This guidance will eventually lead to a more desirable reaction which will result in a calmer and less phobic person.

At the back of every subject’s mind, there is still a sense of self preservation, and this is why the hypnotist can merely offer suggestions to them. In many cases, if the subject is doubtful enough, he can quite easily override these suggestions. How Hypnosis WorksThis explains why many people who are not open to hypnosis can not be put under the hypnotic suggestions. The subconscious mind is still very active during hypnosis. It is the conscious one that is uninhibited and relaxed. When it comes to treating conditions with hypnosis, ones that are related to the human mind are those that generally respond the best. Having said that, there are still some conditions not directly related to the human mind that can respond positively to hypnosis but these are few and far between, and don’t always respond positively. The best conditions that respond well are addictions, weight problems and especially those regarding self esteem. In many cases sleep and dermatologic disorders may be positively affected by hypnosis. In some instances to show just how hypnosis works, even stress related conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome and hives can be cured.
